Needs assessments for Area Agencies on Aging
An Area Agency on Aging plans its services through an area plan under the Older Americans Act, and the plan has to rest on the assessed needs of older adults and caregivers in its region. Many of the people it most needs to hear from will never fill in an online form.
What the Older Americans Act framework expects
- An area plan for the agency’s planning and service area (Older Americans Act, section 306; 42 U.S.C. 3026).
- An assessment of the needs and priorities of older adults, with attention to those in greatest economic and social need, and public input from older adults, caregivers and families (45 CFR part 1321).
- State units on aging set the plan cycle and the format, commonly every four years with annual updates.
